SEATTLE, WA - EL’ona Kearney, a candidate for Governor, shares her powerful story and unique experiences that make her a remarkable advocate for unheard voices, including domestic violence survivors. As a survivor of domestic violence herself, Kearney has firsthand knowledge of the system’s failures and the challenges victims face.
Kearney's ex-husband, a police officer, attempted to take her life. Despite her desperate situation, the "good old boys' system" protected him, leaving her and her children vulnerable. On the day of the incident, she was on the phone with a shelter director who guided her through the traumatic experience. However, crucial paperwork was not filed, and a fireman who documented the evidence and spoke up for her was fired. The law failed to protect Kearney and her children, highlighting the system's profound flaws.
Unable to qualify for the state relocation fund due to restrictive requirements, Kearney refused to live in fear. Through networking and sharing her story, she found a retired Supreme Court lawyer who represented her pro bono. This journey revealed the systemic issues victims face, making it nearly impossible to escape violence in many cases.
While Attorney General Bob Ferguson boasts legal experience, under his watch, the domestic violence rate has increased from 53 to 64 per year. In 2023, a judge criticized him for "egregious" and "cavalier" withholding of evidence in an abuse case. His recent actions against sexual abuse appear more like election theatrics than genuine advocacy.
Kearney urges voters to consider the importance of transparency and lived experience in a candidate. "A squeaky-clean candidate should raise concerns about their untold truths. I have been transparent about my past, present, and my vision for Washington state," says Kearney.
EL’ona Kearney’s campaign emphasizes unity, support, and community, aiming to create a state that truly supports and protects its people. She invites voters to join her in this mission.
