January 4, 2023, Seattle, WA - As gubernatorial candidate EL'ona Kearney continues her campaign, she emphasizes the importance of parental rights and transparency in education. Drawing from her personal experiences as a mother, EL'ona understands the challenges parents face in ensuring the well-being of their children, particularly within the education system.
Having homeschooled her own children, EL'ona became extremely aware of a legal concept called "In loco parentis," which designates schools as legal custodians of children while they are on school property. This realization came after her child experienced bullying at school, prompting multiple complaints that led to retaliation from the school administration. Despite seeking legal recourse, EL'ona faced significant obstacles, ultimately leading her to homeschool her children.
EL'ona's policies on education prioritize transparency and parental rights. She believes that parents should have the right to opt out of practices that contradict their beliefs, ensuring that schools respect individual values and promote mutual respect and understanding among students. Her proposed solutions include implementing diverse and inclusive curricula, reintroducing successful educational methods like project-based learning, and increasing investment in educational resources and support services.
"As a veteran, I served to protect individual rights as long as they do not infringe on others," EL'ona emphasizes. Her campaign advocates for Advancing Equitable Education Access and Quality, with a focus on creating an environment where every student can thrive academically and reach their full potential.
