Seattle, WA - July 12, 2024 - EL’ona Kearney is not just another candidate; she is a movement, leading the charge to remove stereotypes and labels from politics. Since May 2022, she has passionately campaigned under the slogan "Removing Labels," aiming to change how society views Black women in politics and, more broadly, to change the face of politics itself.
EL’ona’s candidacy represents a historic opportunity. While she does not campaign solely on her identity, she recognizes the significance of potentially being the first Black woman governor in U.S. history. Her focus, however, is on proving her qualifications and her ability to lead.
Through her research, EL’ona discovered that political parties, special interest groups, and unions often pre-select candidates for major offices up to eight years in advance. These exploratory committees and PACs (Political Action Committees) funnel money into campaigns long before election years, creating an uneven playing field. “Our votes don’t count when money is everything,” says Kearney. “Visibility for name recognition can be bought, but true transparency and connection with the people cannot.”
The struggles EL’ona has faced reveal the deep inequities within the political system. From finding out she and the other women candidates were not equal receiving candidate forum invites has their male counterparts to being demeaned by Former Democrat Senator Maralyn Chase, and receiving racist text messages and social media attacks from Republican candidate Kristina Mitchell.
EL’ona’s experiences extend beyond personal attacks. Kearney has faced her share of misinformation and media bias. Despite receiving an email apology from the Lynnwood Times for a false report, the paper has yet to correct its errors. In a grassroots campaign, where every ounce of credibility is painstakingly built, such misinformation can be damaging. Yet, EL’ona remains undeterred, pushing forward with her message of transparency and hope.
