EL’ONA KEARNEY FOR GOVERNOR ACKNOWLEDGES THE FERRY SYSTEM ISSUES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seattle, Washington - September 19, 2023 - As gubernatorial candidate EL’ona Kearney concludes her extensive tour across 39 counties, her final stop in Island County shed light on critical issues affecting ferry workers and island residents.

During her visit, Kearney engaged with ferry workers and island residents, listening to their concerns regarding the ongoing breakdowns and delays of ferries, coupled with the high costs of ferry travel combined with workers' relatively modest incomes. Key grievances revolved around the government's restriction on privatized companies from undertaking certain ferry-related tasks, while unions expressed dissatisfaction with inadequate funding for ferry maintenance and operations.

In response to these pressing issues, Kearney pledges to collaborate between union and private sectors to ensure consistent and efficient ferry services for commuters. Kearney emphasizes the need to incorporate input from experts and specialists in marine transportation, logistics, and infrastructure development, lamenting the government's tendency to overlook their expertise.

Moreover, Kearney advocates for a strategic reevaluation of existing budget allocations, rejecting hasty tax increases proposed by incumbent Governor Inslee in favor of a more prudent approach. Rather than blindly pursuing all-electric transportation initiatives without thorough assessment, Kearney urges redirecting funds towards updating aging vessels, enhancing safety protocols, and implementing cleaner fuels and emission-reducing technologies.
